Summit Auto Group Best of the Week: It would have proven a disastrous week without Brycen Goodine’s most timely basket of the season. With the score tied 71-71 between SU and Wake Forest on February 8 at the Dome, Goodine found himself in the right place and, with two seconds left in regulation, poured in the go-ahead basket. Moments later, the Orange had a 73-71 victory, its sixth win in seven games, and one that got more valuable when SU stumbled against North Carolina State a few days later.
SOS Rewind and Archive: Of all the coaches SU has to face in the ACC, none has more cache as a player than Danny Manning at Wake Forest. Of course it was Manning who all but carried Kansas to the 1988 NCAA championship, similar to what John Wallace did with the Orange in its 1996 run to the title game – which included a regional final win over Kansas, the very same program it would turn back in New Orleans seven years later to win it all. So much of the college game is tied to Kansas – the first coach there was Dr. James Naismith himself.
AFLAC Trivia Tidbit: As the last weeks tick down in the Dome before it reconstruction project, it’s hard for anyone other than older fans to remember the Manley Field House days that peaked 40 years ago, in February 1980. It was there that the “Louie and Bouie Show” peaked, SU reaching the top of the national rankings on the way to the regular-season championship in the inaugural season of the Big East Conference. But who was the third-leading scorer on that team? Marty Headd, who averaged 12 points per game.
Upstate Medical University Community Corner: It wasn’t like SU was completely done with Manley Field House after 1980. Fourteen years later, at the start of the 1994-95 season, the Orange found itself at Manley facing George Washington in the opening round of the preseason NIT. With Manley packed, the Orange trailed most of the game but Michael Lloyd hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to force overtime, only to have the Colonials take over in the extra period to win it 111-104. SU wouldn’t lose that season again until January 23 against Connecticut.
U.S. Army Weekly Recap: With a week to regroup after the battle with Duke, SU nearly let it go to waste as it took on Wake Forest February 8 and held on to win by a score of 75-73, needing Brycen Goodine’s last-second basket to escape an upset bid. Still in need of every win possible to stay in NCAA Tournament contention, the Orange hosted North Carolina State three nights later, only to have the hungry Wolfpack beat them 79-74, overcoming a career-best performance from Joseph Girard III, whose 30 points included going 11-for-12 at the line.
