Summit Auto Group Best of the Week: It was quite a debut for Alan Griffin. The Illinois transfer who shares the same name but is no relation to SU men’s basketball assistant coach Allen Griffin immediately had an impact on the Orange in its November 27 season opener against the Bryant Bulldogs, putting up 16 points, every one of them important to help SU fend off Bryant’s upset bid and prevail 85-84, all this having not practiced for most of the previous two weeks.
SOS Rewind and Archive: This begins the 25th anniversary of the 1995-96 season that ended up with SU going all the way to the NCAA championship game. That season began this week a quarter-century ago – November 25, 1996, a relatively quiet affair at the Dome where the Orange met the Lafayette Leopards and prevailed 87-63. In what would become a season-long pattern, John Wallace set the pace with 20 points, though he would have even more memorable efforts as that season went on.
AFLAC Trivia Tidbit: So it’s no surprise that John Wallace was the leading scorer most of the time in that 1995-96 season for SU. So what was the first game where someone else led the Orange in scoring? It was the seventh game of the season, December 13, SU facing a Bowling Green team which SU legend Louis Orr would later coach, and it was Todd Burgan getting 19 points as the Orange beat the Falcons 75-64, just as it was starting to enter the national rankings.
Atlas Fence Community Corner: One real treat about SU’s opening game against Bryant on November 27 was seeing two hometown hoops heroes return home as part of the Bulldogs. Charles Pride, who started and had 15 points, led the Ryan Blackwell-coached Liverpool Warriors to the 2018 state Class AA title, the first in program history. Reserve Lucas Sutherland helped the West Genesee Wildcats make an unlikely run to its first-ever state title one season later.
U.S. Army Weekly Recap: Returning to game action after being on COVID-19 pause without much practice time proved quite challenging for SU’s men’s basketball team on November 27 when it faced the Bryant Bulldogs. But after trailing for long stretches of the game, the Orange were able to pull out an 85-84 decision with four players netting at least 15 points, a well-balanced attack that Buddy Boeheim paced with 21 points as Marek Dolezaj put in 20 points.
